HISTORY

It could be said that The SOFT-COATED WHEATEN TERRIER was almost forgotten, even though this dog had been well known for more than 200 years among the farmers and the poorer folk of Ireland. The Wheaten was used to hunt vermin and drive herds of cattle and sheep. Since he was used as a general purpose farm dog, this breed did not attract the same attention as did the Kerry Blue and the Irish Terrier. Through the years, the SCWT has developed into a sturdy, intelligent and loveable dog without being over aggressive or nervous.
Recognition of the SOFT-COATED WHEATEN TERRIER by the Irish Kennel Club was achieved in 1937. He is now also officially recognized by the American Kennel Club since 1973, by England’s Kennel Club since 1975 and most recently by the Canadian Kennel Club in 1978.
